Solutions

From the chattering media class to the proverbial “man on the street” – so many folks have fallen into a soft fatalism, an unconscious resignation that nothing can really change when we look at the serious problems we face. Immigration and Israel, fatherless homes and federal deficits, ecological and economic challenges – all seem intractable.

The problems we face have solutions. Courage and creativity, innovation and integrity will be required. The heart of any effective answer is simple, even if there are complexities in application. Here are some starting points for solving several issues confronting us right now, July 20, 2014:

Peace in the Middle East: Support Israel and call on Arab leadership to recognize her right to exist as a Jewish and sovereign state. Demand an end to all denial of the Holocaust and Israel’s right to her ancestral home as well as an end to elimination ideology and terrorism. The haters only respond to strength. Camp David can happen again.

The (artificial) Immigration Crisis: Secure the border. Care for the human needs in the USA and Mexico. Screen every person and enforce current laws. Stop using children as political and social pawns to destroy the American experiment and flood Texas with Democratic voters. Deport all illegal alien felons currently in US prisons.

The Federal Deficit: Begin with a 10% pay cut for all federal government officials; 20% for all making more than $200,000. This will test how many are “serving” the public interest. Cut 10% more out of the administrative program budgets of every federal agency. New furniture and another junket can wait. Have business leaders assess efficiencies, make recommendations and implement them.

Economic Inequality: Equality of access and opportunity is not a guarantee of equal outcomes. Remove unneeded regulations and stimulate business development with streamlined processes and tax breaks. Compel able-bodied folks receiving federal and state assistance to volunteer on infrastructure and service projects. Remind everyone of the dignity of a full day’s work.

Family Anarchy: Enforce and tighten accountability for parents that conceive a child through consensual intimacy. Make it socially shameful for spouses that fail to care and support children they are responsible for. The best gifts parents give their children are fidelity to each other, hard work and unconditional love.

Islamic Radicalism and Terrorism: Call on peaceful Muslims to renounce all terrorism, affirm full equality for people of all faiths or none and agree to end all threats to their adherents that choose another (or no) religion. Keep Rapid Response forces ready to destroy terrorist dens when found and end all occupying responsibilities apart from strategic bases.

Activists, entrenched unions, economic and political cronies will all oppose these measures. Their opposition is proof that these solutions may work. After all, if most folks choose fidelity, offer and full day’s work, demand accountability from their government and stop allowing envy poison their souls, then some of these “advocates” may have to find real jobs.

Intelligent Compassion

The manufactured crisis on the USA-Mexico border calls for thoughtfulness, not polemics, intelligent compassion for thousands, not agitprop soundbites and images. It is possible to welcome those that desire a better life while upholding the rule of law and screening out pernicious persons dedicated to our demise.

There is serious physical and psychological damage  being inflicted on  the thousands of minors that are pawns in a cynical and selfish game. Genuine refugees from violence, family members of legal U.S. residents and others that follow the rules need all the help we can muster. But the influx of people with communicable diseases, gang members and terrorists is nothing to dismiss. The fact that Mexican gangs and military personnel have fired on our Border Patrol in our territory call for enforcement, not capitulation. The potential for sex or work slavery for these desperate folks is palpable.

What is the answer? We have a President refusing to negotiate in good faith and Republican leaders paralyzed by political fear. Amnesty for all will not play in home districts, but tightening regulations opens leaders to accusations of hard-heartedness, racism and xenophobia.

The way forward involves courage, integrity and wisdom. Here are policies that will work:

*Secure the border and screen entrants for the safety of all – both USA residents and the immigrants themselves.

* Establish streamlined processes so that all emigres have clear avenues, from laborers to high-tech workers, refugees of war to family members of legal residents.

* Legislate reforms that respect the law and hold all branches of government and enforcement accountable.

* Deport all prisoners here illegally.

* Finally, changes the language to reflect reality: “Unaccompanied” and “undocumented” are euphemisms. One is either illegal or legal, following the rules or violating the law.

We can do better…Ellis Island 1880-1920 is proof of this. Let’s exercise intelligent compassion and watch our future grow brighter.

Deficits and Surpluses

It is difficult enduring the childish squabbling and crush-the-opponent-at-all-costs strategies emanating from Washington, D.C. and so many devastated cities. While politicians collect their pensions and salaries, and a few favorites (like General Motors!) store billions in cash overseas, most of the nation awaits leadership that is honest and wise, with the good of all Americans in mind, not just select constituencies that ensure victorious elections. Some decisions border on the tragicomedic: Colorado lowering tuition for the undocumented while qualified US citizens pay more for an education. Millions go on food stamps (with government urging) and Homeland personnel get a cool grand for uniforms while our President cancels White House tours and plays more golf. Obama has dinner with a few Republican insiders, but legitimate budget plans in the House are rejected sight unseen.

Something is broken.

Most Democrats know the gravy train must end soon. Republicans cannot seem to find a tune that will be hummed by hard working African-American and Hispanic citizens whose values are closer to theirs that the current Administration.

The problem is not the politicians.

Yes, the Mayor of New York is out of control with lifestyle regulation. Parts of Detroit are Haiti with cold weather. Everyone is so afraid of libelous labels that immigration “reform” will only encourage more defiance of the law.

We have deficits of discipline. We have surpluses of state control. The former leads to the latter.

It is difficult to hold politicians accountable for balancing a budget when we expect way too much of government agencies. Mayor Bloomberg’s crusades against fat and sugar are meddlesome, but we have become a super-sized nation and without discipline medical costs will force the kind of rationing we abhor.

We are scandalized by elected officials and their sexual peccadillos while we have a divorce rate of almost 50 % and voraciously consume “adult” entertainment. Our leaders need to keep clothing on and hands off the public till. And we need fidelity to our spouses and children.

We penalize economic success with excessive regulation and taxation and insist on more laws for gun ownership. Meanwhile, we pass legislation allowing Hollywood to produce more violent movies. Federal agencies are buying ammunition in wartime quantities. Such contradictions will not bear close scrutiny by thoughtful people.

We are living on our impulses, not insights as we satisfy whims instead of seeking wisdom.

We must begin a grassroots movement of personal and public integrity, with truth and transparency in deed as well as speech. We need to self-regulate and produce more than we consume, thus arming ourselves with moral authority that will cause politicians to think twice before passing more unfunded mandates. We can reaffirm the best of our founder’s virtues without repeating their mistakes. Freedom requires virtue and virtue rests on unchanging principles, not “evolving” notions of truth.

Let’s discharge our deficits of discipline and enjoy surpluses of sanity. Failure to reform from within our hearts and homes will end in totalitarian demands for our hearts and homes.

Presidential Legacies

Time is kind and unkind to the legacies of American Presidents. Washington and Lincoln will forever tower above all the rest. Washington truly is the Father of our Country, embodying all the aspirations and virtues of a new nation. Lincoln was the liberator of millions and the Preserver of the Union.

Other Presidents of good repute find that time allows for criticism and moderating of enthusiasm. Jefferson, Wilson and FDR are huge historical figures, but their achievements came at a price many think was too steep. John Adams and his presidential son John Quincy Adams will never inspire great affection; however, respect for their character and the context of their challenges allows more generous evaluation.

In the 20th century, it is hard not to pine for the solidity of Truman and Eisenhower, especially their ability to work across party lines. Nixon and Carter will continue to earn criticisms, with even Bill Clinton improving his legacy because he was able to work with Republicans and balance a budget.

I am not pleased with recent presidential performances, whether they are Democrats or Republicans. Our current administration is not facing the major issues well. This said, there is still time for a positive legacy of achievement. Obama will always be famous as our first African-American President. It would be wonderful for our nation’s future and for his legacy if he humbly works with all parties and accomplishes real deficit reduction, immigration reform and brokers some peace accords globally.

We do not have a Monarch. We do have a President that our founders intended to serve with character and competence, cooperating with Congress and respectful of the rule of law. May we find women and men worthy of this historic vocation.

Israel: A Gift to the World

A traveler from outer space visiting the newsrooms of The EU, UN and USA the past few years might conclude that Israel is the world’s greatest threat to human rights and world peace. Visits to most public college campuses would confirm that this little land is a center of fascism and racism, determined to exterminate impoverished Palestinians. As our extraterrestrial explorer tunes in to Al-Jezeera, images of innocents killed by Israeli missiles fill the screen, and jihadist cries of “Death to the Jews!” accost the ears. With no other images or narratives, our E.T. concludes that Israel needs containing and perhaps oversight by a more benevolent nation that will consider the plight of refugees in the “occupied territories” of the West Bank.

Alas, we do not need a visitor from another galaxy – all of the assertions above are the daily message of most news outlets around the world. Tragically, millions are being manipulated by a warped narrative that disregards ethics, history and peacemaking efforts.

The modern state of Israel is a gift to the world and a symbol of good that arises when liberty, the rule of law and sacrificial community converge.

Before I defend Israel’s right to exist alongside a two Palestinian states (Jordan and a new Palestine dedicated to peace), allow me some qualifiers for this essay:

  • I am not engaging in biblical or theological discussions concerning the place of Israel in  prophecy, Armageddon or other points of religious dispute among Jews and Christians. These debates are important, but they are not the focus of this work.
  • I reject replacement theology that sees no legitimacy or need for a Jewish homeland. I also oppose extremist Zionism that will not rest until all Arabs are removed from the equivalent of King Solomon’s ancient empire.
  • From the 1920s to the present, Arab and Jewish populations have been in conflict and both sides have committed deplorable acts. This said, there is not equivalence between the two sides. Very few Israelis call for policies of extermination. Multiple times Israel has made peace only to see it subverted by groups unwilling to treat the Jews as human beings.
  • In the midst of all the violence, Palestinian Christians suffer the most, distrusted by both Jewish and Muslim neighbors.

There are four reasons for celebrating and defending Israel in the 21st century:

  1. History: Israelis are living in the land of their ancestors and have the most significant continuous presence of any people group. Their claim of a small portion of land around Jerusalem is supported by history and their religious traditions. In contrast, Islamist extremists cannot cannot give significant Qur’anic support for Jerusalem as a holy city – at least until their conquest of the seventh century and rewriting of narratives. Many Muslim radicals deny the existence of an ancient Jewish Temple…along with the 20th century Holocaust.
  2. Humanitarianism: Israel emerged out the ashes of the Shoah and the devastation of World War II. Arab nations see the UN Mandate of 1947 as a Western imposition and invasion. What is forgotten is that the original grant for a Jewish homeland encompassed locations with a majority Jewish population. Most of the land was legally purchased during the previous eighty years. This U.N. action left the Golan with Syria, Gaza and the Sinai with Egypt, and most of Jerusalem and all the West Bank with Jordan. The truce of 1949 left these areas intact, with some security zones. Sadly, it also meant the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the forced emigration of an even greater number of Jews from the Arab nations.
  3. A healthy democracy and economy: Israel is the only free society in the entire region. There is great political, religious and social diversity, including more than a million Arab citizens, squabbling political parties, vibrant entrepreneurs, a welfare state and a citizenry weary of war but determined to resist another Holocaust. The desert has blossomed like a rose as people from around the world reclaim barren and swampy land, invent new technologies and learn to live very close together. The nations that possess peace accords with Israel have fared better that groups that keep millions in forced squalor while they yell, “Jihad!”
  4. Hope: Israel is a dramatic story of courage and perseverance, with ultra orthodox and secular groups living side-by-side, forging a fragile nation and praying and working for peace with Arab neighbors suffering under oppressive Islamists refusing prosperity in favor of intolerance and violence. Under the radar, multiple peace groups are working for understanding and justice while armed forces eyes each other suspiciously through field glasses.

The moment Palestinian leaders fully accept Israel’s legitimacy and safety, peace becomes possible. Such acknowledgment will be delayed indefinitely as long as the poison of anti-Semitism continues to infest Arab and European leaders. Abbas must stop denying history and delaying hope for millions. He and his leaders must show fortitude and risk fatwas for lasting stability. Israeli leaders must willingly renew prior accords once their national existence is legitimized with unequivocal spoken and written agreements.

Israel must provide assurances and incentives for any new Palestinian state and be flexible on Jerusalem, willing to tear down most of the ugly border barriers and create economic and social partnerships for prosperity. Such actions cannot be initiated unconditionally or Israel risks emboldening radicals that see any peace overtures as weakness.

Israel is a moral, political and social good for the world, providing opportunities for her neighbors that may usher in a season of peace. The EU, UN and USA must find fortitude and repudiate anti-Semitism and calls for elimination. We are perilously close to 1938 when the West lost her moral will and tried appeasement with evil. Czechoslovakia was dismembered, Poland placed in peril, the the USSR  was driven to a demonic pact with Hitler. The result was a war that claimed tens of millions of lives.

I pray we will learn from history and live in hope, refusing capitulation to fear and intolerance. An end to innocent suffering in this troubled region would be an apt Christmas gift indeed.
